Lieutenant General Sadhana Saxena Nair, who has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal, took over as Director General Medical Services (Army) on 01 August 24. She has become the first woman to be appointed to this high post. Earlier, she was also the first woman to take over the post of Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces) after promotion to the rank of Air Marshal.
Lieutenant General Sadhana Saxena Nair started her schooling at St. Mary’s Convent in Prayagraj (Allahabad) and completed her studies at Loreto Convent in Lucknow. Meanwhile, she studied in schools in Tezpur, Gorakhpur, Kanpur and Chandigarh. Sadhana Nair graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune with a distinguished academic record. She was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985.

Sadhana Saxena Nair has a graduate degree in Family Medicine and a Diploma in Maternal & Child Health and Health Care Management. She has also undergone two years of training in Medical Informatics at AIIMS, New Delhi. Apart from this, she has trained in CBRN Welfare with the Israeli Defense Forces and in Military Medical Ethics with the Swiss Armed Forces at Spiez, Switzerland. Sadhana Saxena is also the first female Principal Medical Officer of the Western Air Command, IAF and Training Command, IAF.
She was nominated as an Expert Member of the prestigious Dr. Kasturirangan Committee to draft the Medical Education component of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2019. For her commendable service, Lt Gen Sadhana Saxena has been awarded the AOC-in-C (WAC) and CAS Commendation as well as the Vishisht Seva Medal by the Hon’ble President of India. Three generations of her family have served in the Armed Forces over the last seven decades.
Lieutenant General Officer Sadhana Saxena is married to Air Marshal K.P. Nair (Retd). She has the unique distinction of being the daughter and sister of military doctors and the wife and mother of fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force.
