What is a polygraph test?

Many times, to extract the truth from the accused, the police conducts a polygraph test, in which an attempt is made to catch the lie through a lie detector machine. In this, it is ascertained through the changes in the body of the accused during his answer whether the accused is answering the question correctly or not. In this test, the physical movements of the accused are read thoroughly. Then, based on the reaction of the accused, it is decided whether the answer is true or false.

How does this machine work?

This is a machine which has many parts. Some units are attached to the body of the accused. For example, the units of the machine are put on the fingers, head, mouth. When the accused answers, the data is received from these units, which goes to a main machine and detects the truth or lie. The units that are connected to the body include pneumograph, cardiovascular recorder and galvanometer. Also, pulse cuffs are tied on the hands and Lombroso gloves are tied on the fingers.

Along with this, blood pressure, pulse rate etc. are also monitored by the machine. The pulse rate and breathing etc. are monitored through a pneumograph in the device worn on the body. During the answer, truth and lie are judged through breath. It has a tube which is tied around the chest. Heart beat and blood pressure are monitored with a cardiovascular recorder because there is an abnormal change in it when a lie is told, through which the truth can be ascertained.

How is the truth discovered?

Along with this, the electric conductivity of the person’s skin is checked through a galvanometer. Then this data is collected through a recording device. In the process of this test, first normal questions are asked to the accused, which have nothing to do with the case. Then most of the questions are asked in yes or no format and its experts find out the truth from the data of those machines. In this, the result is derived according to the data of pulse rate, blood pressure, breathing, changes on the skin, physical senses.

When and how did this horrific incident happen

This horrific incident happened on the night of 8-9 August, when the body of a trainee doctor was found in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. This doctor was 31 years old, who was on night duty that day with three other doctors. Two of these doctors were from the Chest Medicine Department, one was a trainee. One employee was from the hospital’s house staff. That night all these doctors and employees had dinner together.

After this, the lady doctor went to the seminar hall of the hospital to sleep at around 2 o’clock in the night. After this, Sanjay Roy came to this seminar hall from the back door and first he brutally murdered this girl and then raped her. The biggest thing is that this accused was neither from the hospital staff, nor was he a relative of any patient. He used to work as a civic volunteer for Kolkata Police.

Whenever a policeman was admitted to this medical college, he used to be present as an assistant to bring his medicines and for other help. But on the day this incident happened, the accused had not come to the hospital for any work. That day he came to the back of the hospital to drink alcohol and after drinking alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone. Then he committed the crime.

After this, he was seen coming out of the seminar hall at around 4.45 am. After committing the crime, the accused had tried to tamper with the evidence. Police have found evidence which shows that the accused had tried to wash off the blood stains from the crime scene. After returning home, he also washed his clothes. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS.
