Kolkata incident: Protesters created a ruckus in the medical college, the crowd broke the barricades and entered inside

Junior doctors protesting against the rape and murder of a lady doctor in Kolkata staged a protest and created a ruckus in the medical college. The protesters broke the barricades and entered the hospital. They allege that an attempt was made to tamper with the evidence at the crime scene. Resident doctors as well as medical students are among the protesters.

Earlier, the case was heard in the Kolkata High Court, after which the court handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI. Now the CBI will investigate instead of the Kolkata Police. The court has ordered that the documents of CCTV footage and statements related to this case be handed over to the CBI by 10 am on Wednesday. Not only this, the court said that the investigation will be done under its supervision.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam also urged the protesting doctors to return to work. The bench said that it is their responsibility to treat patients in government hospitals. The bench appreciated the sentiments expressed by the doctors and interns regarding the incident and said that even after five days, there has been no significant progress in the investigation.

On this, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the state government said that one person has been arrested in this case. Statements of more than 25 people have been recorded. He also claimed that the investigation is being done in a proper manner. The bench said that it is disappointing that the then principal of the medical college, Sandeep Ghosh, did not perform his responsibility properly. He was asked to go on a long leave.

On Monday, the police handed over the postmortem report to the family of the lady doctor who was raped and murdered. This report talks about the murder, the nature of the death and sexual penetration. It says that the victim was strangled to death. She was raped before that. The accused strangled her twice. She died between 3 and 5 in the morning.

The autopsy report also ruled out the possibility of suicide and said that the victim was raped and then murdered. According to this report, the trainee doctor’s private parts, eyes and mouth were bleeding. There were injury marks on her face and nails as well. There were injury marks on her stomach, left leg, neck, right hand and lips as well. Her neck bone was also found broken into two parts.

This horrific incident happened on the night of 8-9 August, when the body of a trainee doctor was found in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. This doctor was 31 years old, who was on night duty that day with three other doctors. Two of these doctors were from the Chest Medicine Department, one was a trainee. One employee was from the hospital’s house staff. That night all these doctors and employees had dinner together.

After this, the lady doctor went to the seminar hall of the hospital to sleep at around 2 o’clock in the night. After this, Sanjay Roy came to this seminar hall from the back door and first he brutally murdered this girl and then raped her. The biggest thing is that this accused was neither from the hospital staff, nor was he a relative of any patient. He used to work as a civic volunteer for Kolkata Police.

Whenever a policeman was admitted to this medical college, he used to be present as an assistant to bring his medicines and for other help. But on the day this incident happened, the accused had not come to the hospital for any work. That day he came to the back of the hospital to drink alcohol and after drinking alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone. Then he committed the crime.

After this, he was seen coming out of the seminar hall at around 4.45 am. After committing the crime, the accused had tried to tamper with the evidence. Police have found evidence which shows that the accused had tried to wash off the blood stains from the crime scene. After returning home, he also washed his clothes. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS.
