Kolkata incident: People switched off the lights of their houses in protest, blackout in Raj Bhavan too

In Kolkata, hundreds of people switched off the lights of their homes and came out on the streets to register their protest against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The parents of the deceased doctor also joined the protest. West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose also supported the protest by switching off the lights of the Raj Bhavan and lighting candles.

Speaking to the media, the deceased doctor’s father said, “We have to leave; what else can we do? Things are going too slow; we can’t tolerate this. We have a lot of questions, and we will ask these questions to the police.” Protesters at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital held a candlelight protest.

People in Kolkata switched off the lights of their houses

A large number of people also joined the protest in Kolkata’s Shyambazar. Many people were seen lighting candles and some were seen waving the tricolor. The protesters of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital also switched off the lights of their homes. BJP leaders Sukanta Majumdar and Agnimitra Paul also joined the protest. The protesters had appealed to switch off the lights of their homes between 9-10 pm.

People expressed their protest by doing street play

It is being told that in Jadavpur area, the protesters performed street play as a symbolic form of protest. Doctors of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and AIIMS in Delhi also registered their protest by lighting candles. The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on the night of 9 August. Since then, protests are being held here continuously.

The principal of the hospital was also arrested

The CBI has also arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandeep Ghosh, on charges of financial mismanagement. Due to this heinous incident, the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the ‘Aparajita Mahila and Bal Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) 2024’. Strict provisions have been made against rape cases in this bill. According to the rules, there is a provision to settle the case in 24 days.
