In the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the victim’s lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya has raised serious questions on the method of investigation of Kolkata Police in an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak. He said that we had a complaint about the way Kolkata Police was investigating this case. That is why this case has been transferred to CBI. Calcutta High Court has entrusted the responsibility of investigation to CBI, now we are waiting to see what results the central agency will come up with.
Lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya said, ‘First the victim’s parents were called from the hospital to inform that their daughter is ill. The parents asked how she fell ill when she was completely healthy. Then after half an hour they were told that you should come, your daughter has committed suicide. This is a hospital, there are many doctors there who could have told by looking at her that it is a rape and murder case. Still the hospital administration tried to call it a suicide by filing an FIR and the police also endorsed this theory. Such a serious case should be investigated scientifically, but this did not happen.’
The victim’s lawyer said that Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer and said that they have arrested the culprit. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also gives a statement that they have arrested the culprit. How did you decide that he is the culprit? That is why we doubted the investigation of the hospital administration and the police. We want that this case should be investigated scientifically and whoever is found guilty should be given the harshest punishment. Only when the culprit is punished for his crime will the victim and her family get justice.
Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya said that first the hospital administration and the police tried to cremate the dead body as soon as possible. In such cases, the dead body is the biggest evidence. Student organizations prevented this from happening. Why was the body taken out for postmortem? The opinion of the doctors who saw the postmortem report is that it is not possible for a single person to do this, there must be more than one person behind this. By doing RG, the hospital administration did not fulfill its responsibility properly in the case. If our daughter dies in our house, then is it not our responsibility? This is where the scope of doubt arises and that is why we demanded a CBI inquiry.
When asked if the victim’s family trusts the CBI investigation, their lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya said, “It has been four or five days now that the CBI has taken over the investigation. They will have to trust it. In the investigation so far, the CBI has suspected that the murder did not take place at the place where the dead body was found. There is a suspicion that the body was brought and left there after the murder at another place. If this is true, then it is a very serious matter. We would like the CBI to investigate properly and reach a conclusion. It is difficult to set a timeframe in such an investigation. My job was to bring the loopholes to the notice of the court, and I did that.” Regarding the attack by miscreants on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Mamata Banerjee had said that this was the work of ‘Left and Ram. She had accused the Left and BJP of conspiring behind this attack.
Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, the lawyer of the victim’s family, commented on this and said, ‘My direct allegation is that Mamata Banerjee had done this. The Chief Minister gave a statement that day that the opposition and students have been protesting for three days, now I will enter the field. The very next day of her statement, the miscreants attacked the RG Medical College. TMC gathered goons and attacked the hospital. The purpose behind this was to scare the agitating students and destroy the evidence. The miscreants had reached the third floor, vandalized the emergency. They could not reach the seminar hall on the fourth floor. I claim that this was TMC’s plan. Most of the people arrested by the police so far are TMC men. This incident has caused a lot of damage to the image of Kolkata. This incident is being talked about all over the world.’
