Kolkata incident: Civic volunteer of police arrested, hit a doctor sitting on strike while drunk

The protests of junior doctors against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Hospital are continuing. Meanwhile, at around 2 am on Friday night, a civic volunteer of the police reached the protest going on near Kolkata’s Ravindra Bharati University on a bike. He was completely drunk. He hit a junior doctor with his bike.

After this, the police let him go without taking any action. Angered by this, the doctors blocked BT Road for 5 hours demanding the arrest of the accused. Then the police swung into action and arrested the accused civic volunteer. One of the protesting students said that the accused was drunk at the time of the incident, when the incident took place on BT Road at Synthi Crossing near the university in the northern part of the city.

The agitating students blocked the main road for about five hours. They allege that a traffic sergeant helped the civic volunteer escape from the spot. They demand that punitive action be taken against the accused. A senior police officer said, “An FIR has been registered in this case. The accused has been arrested. We have removed him from duty.”

The CBI is investigating the lady doctor rape-murder case from several angles. According to sources, the investigating agency is trying to find out why the police was informed 40 minutes late after the doctor’s body was found. It is also being investigated whether there was an attempt by the hospital authorities to hide the crime between the time the doctor’s body was found and the police reaching the crime scene.

According to the Kolkata Police investigation, the doctor’s body was recovered at 9:30 am on August 9. But the first call to the police station was received 40 minutes later at 10:10 am. The distance between RG Kar Medical College and Tala Police Station is one km, which can be covered in just four minutes. Despite this, it took more than an hour for the police to reach the spot, which is being seen as a major lapse.

Thus, there was a delay of one hour between the discovery of the body and sealing the crime scene. This is the reason why a crowd gathered there, due to which the crime scene was tampered with. The CBI is investigating the CDR of former principal Sandeep Ghosh to find out if there was any interference from his side. He was called for questioning for a record 14th time on Friday. The CBI has also questioned the Tala police station in-charge.
