Kolkata incident: Amidst protests, doctors opened ‘Abhaya Clinic’, giving free treatment to patients

Amidst the ongoing protest against the gruesome incident with a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, junior doctors of Kolkata have started telemedicine service to provide health services to patients. After getting a good response to this initiative, from today the protesting doctors have opened temporary help camps in different parts of the city to see patients. Amidst their protest, junior doctors are providing free medical services to the general public.

In an effort to get justice for the victim, junior doctors are providing free treatment to spread their protest among the general public. West Bengal Junior Doctors Front has set up temporary health camps at 6 places in Kolkata, where junior doctors from many medical colleges including Calcutta Medical College, RG Kar Medical College, National Medical College are attending to patients. The doctors have named the health camps ‘Abhaya Clinics’.

West Bengal Junior Doctors Front said that these camps will be organized every Sunday at Kumartuli, Esplanade Crossing, Ranuchaya Manch, Gate No. 2 of National Medical, Gate No. 1 of NRS Medical. Students of KPC Medical College will see patients at 8B bus stand in Jadavpur. Junior doctors of Joka ESI Hospital will organize health camps in Behala. Health camps will be open from 10 am to 2 pm. The prescription given to the patients by the doctors says ‘We want justice for the victim of RG Kar.’

Junior doctors attended 500 patients on the first day

Let us tell you that the media and protesting doctors have named the RG Kar victim ‘Abhaya’ so that her identity is not revealed. The protesting junior doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said that they attended about 500 patients through telemedicine service on the first day of the health camp. Four new SIM cards have been registered for telemedicine service and the numbers have been shared with everyone. The protesting doctors said, ‘There is no question of giving up the movement. We will continue to struggle to get justice for our sister. We will continue to work in the same way in the coming days as well, until our demands are met.’

Junior doctors of Kolkata have been protesting since August 10

Let us tell you that on the morning of 9th August, the body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She was raped and then murdered, which has been confirmed in the post-mortem report. This trainee doctor was a PG student in RG Kar Medical College itself. Since this barbaric incident, the junior doctors are adamant on demanding justice for their colleague and have boycotted work. After the instructions of the Kolkata High Court, the CBI has taken over the investigation of this case.

7 people including the former principal of RG Kar are being questioned

Kolkata Police has arrested a civil volunteer named Sanjay Roy in this case, who is said to be the main accused in the incident. Sources said that the stance of the junior doctors’ agitation will depend on the CBI report to be presented in the Supreme Court next week. Let us tell you that in this case, the CBI has already conducted a polygraph test of Sanjay Roy. The central investigation agency has also questioned the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, several times. The CBI is questioning Sandeep Ghosh, Sanjay Roy and one of his close associates and 4 medical students of RG Kar in this case, who were on duty in the hospital on the night of 8-9 August.
