Poonam Azad, wife of former Team India cricketer Kirti Azad, passed away on 2 September (Monday). Kirti shared this information through a social media post. When the Indian cricket team won the 1983 World Cup under the leadership of Kapil Dev, Kirti Azad was also a part of that team.

Kirti Azad wrote on X, ‘My wife Poonam is no more. She passed away at 12:40 pm. Thank you all for your good wishes.’ Kirti also told that Poonam Azad’s last rites will be performed on September 2 at Damodar Valley crematorium in Durgapur. Poonam Azad was also active in politics. Poonam was a leader of Aam Aadmi Party before joining Congress in 2017. Kirti and Poonam have two sons – Suryavardhan and Soumyavardhan. Suryavardhan and Soumyavardhan have played for Delhi at the junior level.

Kirti Azad is currently an MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur seat on a Trinamool Congress ticket. He defeated BJP’s Dilip Ghosh in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Kirti played 7 Tests and 25 ODIs for India. In Test cricket, Kirti scored 135 runs and took three wickets. In ODIs, Kirti has 269 runs and 7 wickets to his name.

Kirti’s father was the Chief Minister of Bihar

After trying his hand at cricket, Kirti Azad followed in the footsteps of his father Bhagwat Jha Azad (former Chief Minister of Bihar) and entered politics. Kirti has also been an MP from Darbhanga Lok Sabha seat three times on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Then Kirti Azad joined the Congress party in February 2019 and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Dhanbad. However, he lost that election.
