Kamika Ekadashi 2024: According to the Hindu calendar, Kamika Ekadashi fast is observed on Ekadashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Shravan month. Kamika Ekadashi fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to beliefs, if a person observes this fast with complete rituals, then he gets relief from all the difficulties and obstacles in life.

Worship done on this day also brings blessings from ancestors. Any charity done on this auspicious Ekadashi day removes the troubles of life and opens the doors to salvation. One should also listen to the story of Ekadashi on this day.

Story of Kamika Ekadashi (Kamika Ekadashi Katha)

According to the legend, a Thakur lived in a village and he was very good-hearted but he had a very angry nature. He used to get angry on small things due to which he used to fight with someone or the other everyday. Due to this nature of his, one day Thakur got into a fight with a Brahmin. Thakur could not control his anger and he killed a Brahmin during the scuffle. Due to this Thakur was accused of brahmahatya. Thakur realized his mistake and to atone for it, he wanted to participate in the cremation of the Brahmin but the Pandits refused to let him participate in the Brahmin’s rituals. Brahmins told Thakur that you are guilty of killing a Brahmin. Due to this he was also boycotted from religious and social functions.

Troubled by all these reasons, Thakur asked the Brahmins to suggest a solution that would help him get rid of this sin. Then the Brahmins told Thakur about the Kamika Ekadashi fast. Thakur kept the fast of Kamika Ekadashi in the month of Sawan and followed it with full rituals. One day Thakur saw Lord Shri Hari Vishnu in his sleep. Lord Vishnu told Thakur that he has been freed from this sin. After this incident, Kamika Ekadashi fast started being observed.

Kamika Ekadashi Pujan Vidhi (Kamika Ekadashi Pujan Vidhi)

Wake up in the morning, take a bath and before the puja, take a pledge to fast for Lord Vishnu. Clean the temple of your house thoroughly and place the idol of Lord Vishnu on a stool covered with a red cloth. After this, start the puja. In this puja, offer fruits, flowers, sesame seeds, milk, panchamrit, etc. to Lord Vishnu. Then light a lamp of desi ghee in front of the Lord and start reading the fasting story.

On the day of the fast, chant the name of Lord Vishnu and do bhajan-kirtan. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama on this day is said to be very fruitful. After the puja, offer Makhan Mishri to the Lord and finally conclude the puja with Aarti. On the next day of Ekadashi i.e. on the day of Dwadashi, feed the Brahmins and give them donations and only then eat food.
