Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s concert at the Rogers Centre in Downtown Toronto. The two shared a candid moment on stage as Trudeau greeted Dosanjh in front of a cheering crowd.

However, Trudeau faced criticism on social media for referring to Dosanjh as “a guy from Punjab” in his post on X (formerly Twitter). Many users felt Trudeau should have addressed Dosanjh as an Indian instead.

“Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish @diljitdosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a super power,” Trudeau wrote in his post.

Some users accused Trudeau of being afraid to call Dosanjh an Indian, while others blamed him for making Canada “a terrorist hideout”.

Trudeau’s visit comes amid strained relations between India and Canada following the killing of Khalistani sympathizer Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India has repeatedly expressed concerns to Canada about the accommodation of pro-Khalistan elements on its soil.

Dosanjh, who is currently on his Dil-luminati Tour, performed a sold-out show at the Rogers Centre on July 13. In an Instagram post, he thanked his fans for making history by filling the stadium.

The singer-actor has been making global crossovers, from sharing the stage with Ed Sheeran to appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s show. His latest Punjabi film “Jatt & Juliet 3” is currently running in cinemas.
