Japan’s Prince Hisahito turns 18; A male in the royal family became an adult after 39 years

After 40 years, a member of the Japanese royal family has become an adult. Prince Hisahito, the only son of 58-year-old Crown Prince Fumihito and 57-year-old Crown Princess Kiko, celebrated his 18th birthday on Friday. In this way, after four decades, a boy in this family has reached the age of 18.

Prince Hisahito is the nephew of Japanese Emperor Naruhito and the second-in-line heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne of Japan. Prince Hisahito is the only son of Crown Prince Fumihito, 58, and Crown Princess Kiko, 57. As Prince Hisahito entered adulthood on his 18th birthday on Friday, he expressed his desire to learn from every experience on this occasion.

Age has been a major problem in Japan

In fact, increasing age and decreasing population has been a major problem in Japan and the royal family is also not untouched by this problem. This family has been ruling Japan for hundreds of years but for the last four decades no member of the family had become an adult. In such a situation, Prince Hisahito turning 18 is a relief news for the family.

“I hope to learn more through each experience, absorb different aspects, and grow through them,” the prince said through the Imperial Household Agency, the administrative body that administers affairs related to Japan’s imperial family.

In a statement on Wednesday, he thanked all those who have supported him over the years, Kyodo News reported. “I want to cherish my remaining time in high school,” he said. Born on September 6, 2006, Prince Hisahito is a third-year student at the University of Tsukuba’s Otsuka Senior High School. He is the second-highest-ranking monarch in Japan to succeed his father, Crown Prince Fumihito.

The Imperial Household Agency also said that Prince Hisahito’s coming of age ceremony and press conference will be scheduled after his graduation. This decision has been taken so that it does not affect his studies.

The age of adulthood was reduced in Japan

It is worth noting that he is also the first member of the royal family to reach adulthood under Japan’s revised civil code. In April 2022, the revised code lowered the age of adulthood from 20 to 18. 22-year-old Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, celebrated her adulthood when she turned 20 in 2021.
