Japan’s PM Fumio Kishida will resign next month, why did he have to take this decision suddenly?

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that he will step down next month. He will resign as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in September.

Kishida said during the press conference that he will not contest the election for the post of party president to be held next month. In Japan, the president of the ruling party is elected as the Prime Minister. With this announcement, it is now certain that the country is going to get a new Prime Minister soon.

PM Kishida said that the party needs a new beginning. Through the party’s internal elections, there is a need to tell the people that the Liberal Democratic Party will bring change.

By-elections were held in many cities of Japan in the month of April. LDP had to face defeat in this election. Even after this defeat, there was a demand for Kishida’s resignation. In this way, there was pressure on Kishida to resign for a long time. Let us tell you that elections are to be held in Japan next October.

Why did you have to take this decision?

The ruling LDP in Japan has been in constant controversy. The reasons are believed to be scandals related to the party, controversy over political funding and Kishida’s continuously declining approval rating. In July, Kishida’s approval rating was below 20 percent. This is the eighth consecutive month when Kishida’s rating has been so low. In 2021, PM Kishida’s rating was around 65 percent.

Let us tell you that Kishida took over as the Prime Minister of Japan in October 2021. Kishida replaced Yoshihide Suga.
