The government and the Congress are face to face over the Wayanad landslide. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has now given a notice of breach of privilege over Home Minister Amit Shah’s early warning statement. Jairam Ramesh has claimed that Amit Shah has misled the House on this matter. The Congress leader said that it has been established that misleading the House by a minister or member is a breach of privilege and contempt of the House.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday gave a notice of breach of privilege motion against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that Shah misled the House by saying that the Kerala government was alerted in advance by the Centre regarding the landslide incident in Wayanad.

Home Minister Amit Shah had said in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that the state government was given advance warning seven days before the disastrous landslide in Kerala and nine NDRF teams were also dispatched there on July 23. If the state government had become ‘alert’ after seeing these teams, a lot could have been saved.

In a notice submitted to the Chairman, Congress Chief Whip in Rajya Sabha Ramesh said that in response to the attention motion on Wayanad landslide in Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2024, the Home Minister made several claims and these claims were investigated in the media. Ramesh said- “It is clear that the Union Home Minister misled the Rajya Sabha with his statements on the initial warnings issued by the Central Government. His statement has been proved to be untrue. Under these circumstances, we want to say that privilege proceedings can be initiated against the Union Home Minister in this matter.”
