Amritpal and Engineer Rashit will take oath today

Amritpal and Engineer Rashid Parole: Jailed Punjab radical preacher Amritpal Singh and Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who is facing charges of terror financing, will take oath as Lok Sabha members on Friday. Rashid, who was elected MP from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail in a terror financing case. He is also known as Engineer Rashid. At the same time, Amritpal, the head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization and a Khalistan supporter, won from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the recent parliamentary elections. He was lodged in Dibrugarh jail and has now been brought to Delhi.

Amritpal lodged in Dibrugarh jail

Officials in Amritsar said Amritpal, currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail along with nine associates under the National Security Act, has been granted four-day parole to take oath as Lok Sabha member. Rashid has been granted two hours’ custody parole for taking oath, excluding travel time from Tihar to Parliament, and Singh has been granted four-day custody parole, starting July 5. Singh will be brought to Delhi from Assam and then taken back.

Terms of the parole period

During the parole period, he cannot speak to the media on any issue, address the media or make any statement. As per court orders, even his family members cannot make any kind of statement to the media. An Assam official said an eight-member Punjab Police team reached Dibrugarh on Thursday to take Amritpal to Delhi to take oath as a Member of Parliament. The police team, led by a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) level officer, reached Dibrugarh in the afternoon.

Amritpal will be brought to Delhi by military plane

Amritpal’s lawyer Rajdev Singh Khalsa said that he will be taken to Delhi by a military plane for the swearing-in ceremony. Independent MP from Faridkot Sarabjit Singh Khalsa had said on Wednesday that Amritpal is likely to take oath as MP on July 5. Khalsa had said, I went to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at his residence in Delhi on Wednesday. He said that the oath will be administered on July 5. Rashid, who was elected as an independent candidate, won the Baramulla seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections by defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.

Notice issued to Rashid on election expenses

The Election Commission had sent a notice to newly elected MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid over discrepancies in his election expenditure statement for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from him, TMC’s Shatrughan Sinha has also not yet taken oath as a member of the lower house of Parliament. (PTI-Bhasha input)
