Is the Bangladesh crisis the biggest challenge for the Modi government so far?

After the coup in Bangladesh, it seemed that the situation would become normal. But the way the India Boycott campaign is going on in Bangladesh like in Maldives, it seems that all this is a conspiracy against India under a well thought out strategy. Because now the issue of reservation is no longer there. Now the matter has directly reached the attack on Hindus and boycott of everything Indian in the name of Awami League. First creating an anti-India atmosphere in Maldives and then an anti-India atmosphere in Bangladesh. This is not a coincidence but an experiment. Because both Maldives and Bangladesh have been countries working for India in a way. Pakistan and China have already been enemies of India. Now the number of countries has increased by two more. If Sheikh Hasina’s exit plan from India is not executed soon, then India’s relations with the West may also deteriorate. In this way, the crisis of Bangladesh is increasing day by day.

1- The challenge of keeping Sheikh Hasina in India

In the last two terms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not faced any such challenge which he had any difficulty in facing. The way the Indian government took an immediate decision after the coup in Bangladesh and respectfully got Sheikh Hasina out of Bangladesh has been a great success of the Modi government. Angry protesters in Dhaka could do anything. 50 years ago the story was completely different. Remember, on August 15, 1975, the coup plotters killed Hasina’s father and the founder of the Republic in Bangladesh, Mujibur Rahman, and most of his family members. Which the Indian government could not stop. The world knows that Mujibur Rahman was also a friend of India. Something similar happened in 1992 as well. When Pakistan-backed terrorist groups took over Kabul. President Najibullah, who was close to India, was in trouble. And the Indian government proved unsuccessful in getting him out. The Taliban took Najibullah out of the United Nations Embassy in Kabul and hanged him from a lamppost. But today Sheikh Hasina has become a big challenge for Delhi and the Modi government. It would have been difficult to keep Hasina away from India and confronting her opponents could put India in more trouble. There is a demand from Bangladesh that India should arrest Sheikh Hasina and hand her over. BNP President Khaleda Zia has threatened that if India does not cooperate with Bangladesh in the Sheikh Hasina case, then it will be difficult for India to get Bangladesh’s support in the future. The Indian government was very closely associated with Sheikh Hasina and the growing hatred against her will definitely have an impact against India. The tension between support for Hasina and her growing unpopularity at the domestic level has been clearly seen in the last few years.

2-Deteriorating relations with neighbors

After the ongoing violent protests in Bangladesh and the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her leaving the country, India’s concerns about the neighboring country have increased. India, which is already facing the brunt of terrorism from Pakistan, is now fearing a similar threat from Bangladesh. The biggest question at present is that if the situation remains the same, will Bangladesh become a thorn in the side of India? Only time will answer this question, but the biggest problem for India is that in the last few years it has been losing its neighbors and allied countries one by one. India’s international relations with neighboring countries are also deteriorating.

In the last five years, India has lost five of its allies. Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh was a big ally for India. But if Khaleda Zia’s government is formed, it is certain that she will sing the praises of China and Pakistan. Recently, relations with Maldives also deteriorated, which used to be trusted by India earlier. The India-backed government in neighboring country Nepal has also fallen. After the arrival of Taliban in Afghanistan, bilateral relations have not even started yet. At present, relations with India and Bhutan are quite good, but Bhutan’s growing closeness with China can become a cause of concern at any time. In October 2021, China and Bhutan signed the ‘Three-Step Roadmap’ agreement.

3-Safety of Hindus in Bangladesh

Hindus in Bangladesh are considered supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, due to which their businesses and homes are being attacked. However, attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are not a new thing. When Bangladesh became an independent country in 1971, the number of Hindus here was about 30 percent of the total population. At present, Hindus are left here only 8 percent. Hindus have been continuously targeted. Due to which Bengali Hindus have gradually left Bangladesh and gone to other countries. Whenever instability increases in Bangladesh, Hindus are oppressed there. And a few lakh Hindus come to India. However, in 1971 and after that, a large number of Bangladeshi Muslims have also taken refuge in India. This is the reason that many districts bordering West Bengal have become Muslim majority. In Assam too, a large number of Bengali Hindus and Muslims have migrated from Bangladesh.

The head of the new interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, has appealed to Bangladeshis to provide security to the minorities. Even after this, lakhs of Hindus have gathered on the Indian border, who are trying to migrate to India. BSF jawans are trying to stop them by forming a human chain. BSF Deputy Inspector General Amit Kumar Tyagi said that the jawans had to fire in the air to control the crowd. The problem is that the Indian border of Bangladesh is close to 4096 km. The Indian government cannot see atrocities on Hindus and cannot keep them as refugees in India. UN Secretary General’s Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said in a statement that the United Nations is against attacks and inciting violence on the basis of race and we want to ensure that violence is controlled in Bangladesh.
