Is Rahul Gandhi a British citizen? This question is being asked because a person had filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court demanding cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s election. The person claims that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. This petition was also heard in the Allahabad High Court on Monday.

The petition was dismissed

The Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a PIL questioning the recent election of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to the Lok Sabha and alleging that he was a British citizen. The petitioner had sought withdrawal of his plea.

The Lucknow bench of the High Court said in its order that the petition is dismissed as withdrawn and (the petitioner) is given the liberty to go before the competent authority under Section 9(2) of the Citizenship Act 1955. This order was passed by a bench of Justice Rajan Rai and Justice Om Prakash Shukla while dismissing the petition of S Vignesh Shishir, a farmer and a political party worker from Karnataka.

After much debate, the petitioner said that he wanted to raise his issue before the competent authority under the Citizenship Act 1955, hence he should be allowed to withdraw the petition.

The petition alleged that Gandhi is a British citizen and is ineligible to contest elections in India. Gandhi, a former Congress president, has been a five-time MP and is the Leader of Opposition in the current Lok Sabha. He represents the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
