Is Imane, who defeated the Italian boxer in a few moments, a man or a woman? Why has gender testing been going on in sports for decades?

Paris Olympics 2024 has been surrounded by controversies since the beginning. This time the issue is the Algerian boxer Iman Khalif who entered the boxing ring, who identifies herself as a woman, but whose chromosomes are like men, even the level of male hormones is very high in her. That is, biologically she is a man, but she identifies herself as a woman. Now there are two camps regarding this. One section is in support of the Algerian woman, while the other section is demanding that no person struggling with gender crisis should get entry in women’s sports.

what happened in the boxing ring

On Thursday, there was a match between Italy’s Angela Carini and Algeria’s Iman Khalif. However, after the second punch, Italian boxer Carini withdrew from the match. She sat on her knees and started crying. She was also heard telling the coach that this is not right. Later, in front of the press, Carini said that she had never received such a powerful punch in her entire career.

Iman Khalif is a victim of this disease

Khalif is repeatedly being called a transgender, but it is not so. At the time of birth, he was considered a woman, which was decided by looking at the structure of his genitals. This is written on his birth certificate.

Khalifa, who was born a woman and considers herself a woman, is suffering from a problem called Differences of Sex Development (DSD). In this, not only does the level of male hormone testosterone increase a lot in a woman, but she also has male chromosomes XY. Let us tell you that XX chromosomes are found in women. Earlier there was a term for this disease – Intersex. Now it is called DSD.

Chromosomal manipulation occurs

DSD means a person who has female chromosomes in a male body or male chromosomes in a female body. It is also avoided to directly call them biological male or female because the matter is really complicated. Due to male hormones and chromosomes in a female body, the strength can also be more than that of a woman.

Such a case has been seen in India as well

Professional runner Dutee Chand had to face a lot of controversies during the games. Actually, Chand is a victim of a disease in which the level of male hormone testosterone increases so much that she comes in the category of male runners on the international scale. Due to this problem called hyperandrogenism, Chand was told that she can run with women only when her hormone level decreases

Gender test has been going on for a long time

Such incidents have been happening for a long time. To ensure transparency in male-female competition, gender testing started being done in all major international competitions including the Olympics. In this, the level of male or female hormones in a player is tested. According to a report by Scientific American, the sex testing policy is around 100 years old in sports.

Doubt arose after seeing strong women

In 1928, for the first time, women athletes got a chance to run in the Olympics. People doubted that an athlete who could run so fast could not be a woman. Within eight years, the World Athletes (then International Amateur Athlete Federation) decided that they would allow women who looked suspicious to participate in the competition only after testing them. This was gender testing.

There used to be a nude parade

In the beginning, due to lack of reliable testing methods, athletes were made nude and tested. By 1966, this nude parade was conducted for all women. This parade was conducted in front of a panel of committee. Two years later, after a lot of hue and cry, chromosome testing began. After this, the International Olympic Committee started testing for hyperandrogenism, i.e., testing for hormones in addition to chromosomes.

Mandatory testing was stopped in 1999, but it is still done on athletes who appear suspicious.
