J.D. Vance has made history as the first military veteran on a major presidential ticket since John McCain in 2008. Vance served as a Marine Corps Combat Correspondent from 2003 to 2007, including a six-month deployment to Iraq in late 2005.
Vance started out in Middletown, Ohio, where he was born on August 2, 1984. He enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after high school. As a Combat Correspondent, his job was to document the experiences of fellow Marines and provide a unique perspective on military operations. He did not see direct combat during his deployment.
In his bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy”, Vance reflects on how his time in the Marines shaped him into a disciplined and goal-oriented individual. He describes the ethos instilled in him during boot camp, including the importance of pushing oneself beyond one’s limits. Vance’s military accolades include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

After his four-year enlistment, Vance went on to work as a venture capitalist and later serve as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. As a Senator, he has taken a skeptical stance on foreign aid, particularly regarding Ukraine, and instead called for a focus on domestic issues that resonate with his constituents.
Vance’s military service and experiences have been a defining part of his life and political career. As the first veteran on a major presidential ticket in over a decade, his background is seen as an asset that could help connect with voters, especially those in Rust Belt states.
