Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya had arrived in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian. Pezeshkian took the oath of office on Tuesday. But the very next day Haniyya was killed in an airstrike. Iran is furious over Haniyya’s death. Supreme Leader Khamenei has also ordered the Iranian army to directly attack Israel. But Iran will not be alone in attacking Israel. Its allies can support it in this war.
Iran has one of the most powerful armies in the world, the Islamic Guard Corps. Apart from this, Iran has the support of Hamas in Palestine, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthis in Yemen. Many of Tehran’s allies can support Iran in this attack on Israel. These include countries like Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.
Iran-backed groups in the Middle East
Israel shares its border with Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza Strip. If we leave out Egypt and Jordan, Israel is surrounded by many Iran-backed countries. There are many armed groups in the Middle East which have close ties with Iran. These include Hamas in Gaza Strip, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthi rebels in Yemen. Apart from these, there are many such groups in Iraq, Syria and Bahrain which have direct support of Iran. Iran also has military bases in many countries. In such a situation, it is being said that these countries can also be involved in Iran’s attack on Israel and Israel can be attacked from any front.
The first name in Iran’s declaration of war against Israel Lebanon Belongs to. Lebanese group Hezbollah Iran funds it and also trains the members of this group.
Since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023, Hezbollah has been continuously standing in its camp. In support of Hamas, Hezbollah started firing rockets and mortars towards Israel from the Israel-Lebanon border. Iran and its ally Hezbollah also train Hamas terrorists. In such a situation, there is no doubt that Lebanon is not going to back down if needed in this war against Israel. There can be a two-way attack on Israel from Iran and Hezbollah.
Yemen Active in Houthi rebels is also considered a staunch supporter of Iran. Yemen-backed Houthi rebels are active in the Red Sea. The movement of Iranian fighters in Yemen is not hidden from anyone. According to the report, there are also bases of Iranian fighters in Yemen, from where Tehran can attack Israel if needed.
Syria Iran has a direct presence in Israel. Iran has considerable influence in many Shia groups. In April, Iran directly attacked Israel after the attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. In such a situation, Syria can also be seen standing on Iran’s side in this war. Along with this, Hamas, active in the Gaza Strip, is also one of the Iran-backed organizations.
