Iran arrested 2 dozen people including spies and military officers, rapid action after the death of Hamas chief

Iran has launched a massive investigation into the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya. According to media reports, Iran has arrested more than two dozen people, including senior intelligence officials, military officers and employees at an IRGC Quds Force-run guesthouse in Tehran where the Hamas leader was killed.

Large scale arrests have been made after the murder of Ismail Haniya in an explosion in the early hours of Wednesday. Haniya, who had come to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, was murdered on Wednesday. Although initial reports claimed that he died in an Israeli airstrike, sources later confirmed that he was killed by planting explosives in the guest house. Haniya had come to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president. During this time he was staying in a guesthouse located in northern Tehran, the capital of Iran.

Iran begins investigation

Israel, which has vowed to destroy Hamas, has not admitted it was behind Haniya’s death. According to two Iranian officials, the Revolutionary Guards Corps’ special intelligence unit for espionage has taken over the investigation and is searching for suspects. The intelligence unit hopes to catch members of the assassination team who planned, assisted and carried out the murder.

Haniya was murdered on Wednesday

In fact, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (July 30). During this, Haniyya also met Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The very next day (Wednesday), that is, early this morning, Israel blew up the house in which Ismail Haniyya was staying. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a statement saying that the attack was carried out by targeting Haniyya’s hideout in Tehran. In this, along with the Hamas chief, one of his bodyguards was also killed.

Hamas’ headquarters are in the Gaza Strip. Till now, Hamas was led by Ismail Haniyya, who was its chairman. He took over this job as the successor of Khalid Meshaal since 2017. He lived in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and looked after Hamas’ work from there. In fact, Egypt had banned him from coming to Gaza.
