IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Now there is a fear of losing players in IPL… These 3 rules can change from auction

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: A mega auction is to be held at the end of this year for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. During this time, all 10 teams will be formed completely afresh. They have the right to retain only 4 players. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also started talking to all 10 franchises regarding this auction.

But even before this mega auction, the franchises have started fearing losing players due to a rule. The franchises have also informed the BCCI about this fear. This rule is to conduct a mega auction every three years.

Actually, just before the mega auction, BCCI is talking to the franchises about retaining the players, their purse budget and the format and rules of the mega auction. Meanwhile, a report has come out, which claims that the franchises have placed some of their demands.

Demand to conduct mega auction in 5 years

All the franchise owners agree that the mega auction should be held every 5 years instead of every 3 years. According to ESPNcricinfo, a senior official of a franchise said that there are many advantages of holding the mega auction every 5 years instead of 3. The longer gap will give teams time to prepare young players.

The franchises that have been associated with IPL since 2008 have made huge investments for it. They have set up academies to find talented players from the grassroots level and prepare them for the international level. If a mega auction is held every 5 years, teams will be encouraged to continue doing so, whereas if a mega auction is held every 3 years, there is a fear of losing players.

In fact, this mega auction has happened twice in the history of IPL at an interval of 4 years. For the first time, the mega auction was held after 4 years due to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) returning from suspension after 2 years. This happened in 2018 after 2014. Then due to Corona, the mega auction was held in 2022 after 4 years instead of 2021.

Demand was made to change these 2 rules also

Apart from these, the franchises have also suggested to BCCI to change two other rules. Teams should get a chance to retain 6 players instead of 4. Apart from this, there is also a demand to give the option of 8 Right to Match (RTM) cards.

Let us tell you that it was used in the 2017 auction, when teams were allowed to retain a maximum of five players by combining retention and RTM. RTM is a card that allows teams to buy back their players after the bidding is over for an amount equal to their highest bid.
