An Indian student, Albin Shinto, is feared dead following a suspected drowning incident in Riga, Latvia. The tragedy occurred on July 18, when Shinto, a student from Kerala, went missing while swimming in the Jugla canal with friends. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he encountered difficulties in the water and disappeared beneath the surface despite attempts by his friends to rescue him. A nearby fisherman managed to save two of the rescuers, but Shinto was not located during the initial search efforts, which lasted two to three hours before being suspended due to darkness and limited resources.

The Indian embassy in Sweden and Latvia has been actively involved, maintaining communication with local authorities and offering support to Shinto’s family. They have assured that they will continue to provide assistance as the situation develops. The search for Shinto is expected to resume on Monday, as the authorities assess their resources for a more extensive operation.

This incident has raised concerns among the Indian community abroad and highlights the potential dangers associated with swimming in unfamiliar waters. The embassy’s prompt response reflects its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian nationals overseas.
