The Indian men’s hockey team played its second match against Argentina in the Paris Olympics 2024, which ended in a 1-1 draw. In this match played on 29 July, Lucas Martinez scored a goal for Argentina in the 22nd minute. For India, Harmanpreet Singh scored an important goal on a penalty corner in the 59th minute of the game.

The Indian team, which won an Olympic medal after 41 years in Tokyo, will now play against Ireland in the next match of Pool B on July 30. The Indian team defeated New Zealand 3-2 in its first match. Apart from India, Pool B has New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland, Belgium and Australia. Pool A includes Netherlands, Germany, Britain, Spain, South Africa and host country France. Four teams each from both the groups will reach the quarter-finals.

Argentina could not score on penalty stroke

There was no goal in the first quarter of this match. However, both the teams got one penalty corner each. Then Argentina won the second quarter. In the 7th minute of the second quarter, Lucas Martinez hit a powerful shot from the right flank and Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh could not save it. Earlier in the same quarter, India got three consecutive penalty corners, but could not score a goal. At the time of halftime, Argentina was ahead by 1-0.

After halftime, the Argentine team made some good moves. In the 37th minute of the game, Argentina had a golden opportunity to score a goal on a penalty stroke, but Maico Casella could not score. Casella hit the ball outside the post. In such a situation, the Indian team breathed a sigh of relief. In this quarter, India also had a chance to score a goal on a penalty corner, but it missed the opportunity. Argentina also missed two penalty corners.

India got a total of 10 penalty corners

The last quarter also saw a fierce competition between the two teams. At one point it seemed that the Indian team might lose because till the 57th minute it was trailing 0-1 in the match. After this, between the 58th and 59th minutes, India got four consecutive penalty corners. Harmanpreet could not score on three of them, but finally the captain converted the corner into a goal and saved India’s honour.

If we look at it, the Indian team got 10 penalty corners in this match, out of which it could convert only one into a goal. Now India should have no problem in winning the match against Ireland. But to win against Belgium and Australia, it will have to give its best performance. India will face Ireland on 30 July, Belgium on 1 August and Australia on 2 August.
