Indian Among Six Killed in Shooting Near Shia Mosque in Oman’s Muscat

A mass shooting incident near a Shia mosque in Oman’s capital Muscat has claimed the lives of six people, including one Indian national. The attack also left another Indian injured.

The shooting occurred on July 15 near the Imam Ali Mosque in the Wadi Al Kabir area of Muscat. According to reports, the attack happened on the eve of Ashura, a major Shia Muslim observance that commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

The Indian embassy in Oman confirmed that one Indian citizen was killed and another was injured in the incident. “Following the shooting incident reported in Muscat city on 15 July, Foreign Ministry of Sultanate of Oman has informed that one Indian national has lost his life & another is injured,” the embassy said in a social media post.

In addition to the Indian casualties, four Pakistani nationals were also killed in the attack. The Pakistani embassy in Oman condemned the “dastardly terrorist attack” and said it is working with Omani authorities to repatriate the remains of the deceased Pakistanis.

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that three of its jihadists carried it out. This marks the first operation by the militant group in the Gulf sultanate.

Omani authorities said the three gunmen behind the attack were killed by police. In total, six people were killed, including a police officer, and 28 others from various nationalities were wounded.

The Royal Oman Police stated that “all necessary security measures and procedures have been taken to handle the situation” and that they are continuing investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Violence of this scale is highly unusual in the generally stable Gulf country of Oman. The US Embassy in Oman warned its citizens to “stay away from the area” following the attack.
