The Indian government has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in Bangladesh amid ongoing protests against the country’s job quota system. The protests, sparked by demands to end the 30% reservation for families of freedom fighters, have turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least six people.

According to the advisory issued by the Indian embassy in Dhaka, Indian community members and students residing in Bangladesh are advised to “avoid travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises” due to the “ongoing situation in Bangladesh” . The embassy has also provided multiple 24-hour emergency contact numbers for any assistance required.

The protests, which have been ongoing for several days, were triggered by widespread anger over high youth unemployment in Bangladesh, with nearly 32 million out of work or education among a population of 170 million . The protesters are demanding the abolition of the 30% quota for government jobs, which they claim unfairly benefits members of the ruling Awami League party.

The violence erupted after clashes between thousands of protesters and members of the student wing of the Awami League. At least three students were among the six killed in the Tuesday clashes, according to the police.

In response to the protests, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has promised to set up a judicial panel to investigate the deaths and said the government will appeal a High Court verdict that ordered the reinstatement of the 30% reservation for families of freedom fighters.

The Indian government’s travel advisory is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of its citizens in Bangladesh during this volatile situation. The embassy has urged Indian nationals to avoid unnecessary travel and limit their movement outside their residences until the situation stabilizes.
