The Indian hockey team has performed brilliantly in the Paris Olympics 2024 and won the bronze medal. India defeated Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match played on 8 August (Thursday). The Indian team has won the bronze medal for the second consecutive Olympic Games. Earlier, it had also won bronze in the Tokyo Games. The hero of the Indian team’s victory was captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored two goals (30th and 33rd minutes).

In the first quarter, both teams had a very exciting game, although both teams could not score any goal. Then in the second quarter, Spain showed amazing game, when captain Max Miralles managed to score a goal on penalty stroke. A few seconds before the end of this quarter, India got a penalty corner, on which Harman managed to score a goal. Harman also scored a goal in the third quarter and put India ahead 2-1. In the last quarter, Spain got many chances to score goals, but the Indian defense foiled them.
India has the upper hand against Spain
India has won 8 out of 11 matches against Spain in the Olympics, lost one and drawn two. Before this match, India had won 4 out of the last five matches, including two matches in the Pro League in February. According to the FIH Data Hub, 17 matches were played between India and Spain in the last 10 years, out of which India won 7, Spain won 5 and 5 were draws.
The Indian team was placed in Pool B in the Paris Olympics. The Indian team defeated New Zealand 3-2 in its first pool match. Then it played a 1-1 draw against Argentina. After this, the Indian team defeated Ireland 2-0 in the third match. However, it had to face a 1-2 defeat against Tokyo Olympics champion Belgium. Then in the next match, the Indian team defeated Australia 3-2. Apart from India, Pool B also had teams from New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland, Belgium and Australia. Pool A included Netherlands, Germany, Britain, Spain, South Africa and host country France. Four teams each from both the groups reached the quarter-finals.
The Indian team entered the semi-finals by defeating Great Britain 2-1 in the quarter-finals. However, India had to face a 2-3 defeat against Germany in the semi-finals. Let us tell you that Germany is competing with the Netherlands in the gold medal match. The Netherlands had booked a ticket to the final by defeating Spain 4-0.
