IND vs SL 1st ODI: India-Sri Lanka match ended in a tie, still why was there no super over? Know ICC’s rule

The first match of the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka ended in a tie. In this match played on 3 August (Saturday) at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, host Sri Lanka gave India a target of 231 runs to win. While chasing the target, the Indian team was all out at 230 runs in 47.5 overs.

Why did the super over not happen between India and Sri Lanka?

If we look at it, this is the second consecutive international match between India and Sri Lanka which ended in a tie. Before this, the last match of the T20 series also ended in a tie. However, after the tie, a super over was played in that T20 match in which the Indian team won. However, now the super over is not used after the ODI match ends in a tie. According to the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC), if a T20 international match ends in a tie in any tournament or bilateral series, then there is a provision for a super over.

The situation got so complicated in Colombo that the match ended in a draw!

On to the next one.

However, there is no such rule for ODI International and the rules are different for series/tournaments. The provision of super over in ODIs is mostly kept only for knockout matches of multi-nation events. Super over was definitely used in the match played between Pakistan and Zimbabwe on 3 November 2020. If seen, super over has been used on three occasions in ODI International so far.

The Super Over was first used in the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand. However, the Super Over was also tied then and the result was decided on the basis of boundary count. After this, a Super Over was played in the third and final match of the ODI series between Zimbabwe and Pakistan on 3 November 2020. This was the only time when a Super Over was used in a bilateral ODI series. Then a Super Over was played between West Indies and Netherlands in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifier.

Aslanka ‘played’ in these two balls

In the first ODI against Sri Lanka, at one point India had to score 1 run and had two wickets left, but Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka tied the match by taking two wickets in two balls. Asalanka got Shivam Dubey out LBW on the fourth ball of the 48th over. The on-field umpire did not give Shivam out, but Sri Lanka took a review which was successful. Then on the next ball, Asalanka got Arshdeep Singh out LBW as well.

Arshdeep took a review, but he could not survive. Apart from Aslanka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dunith Velalage also performed brilliantly with the ball for Sri Lanka. Hasaranga took three wickets and Velalage took two wickets. This was the second tie game in ODI history between India and Sri Lanka. Earlier, on 14 February 2012, the match between the two teams ended in a tie. The second match of the ODI series between the two teams will be played on the same ground on 4 August.

The Indian team has an upper hand in the record of both the teams against each other. Let us tell you that 168 One Day International matches have been played between India and Sri Lanka so far. During this period, India won 99 matches, while Sri Lanka emerged victorious in 57 matches. At the same time, 11 matches remained inconclusive. Apart from this, two matches were tied.
