The landslide in Wayanad, Kerala has completely devastated the area. According to the agency, a senior officer said on Tuesday that the army deployed for rescue services in Wayanad district managed to rescue about 1000 people using a temporary bridge. The permanent bridge was washed away due to torrential rains and landslides at the place where the army had built the temporary bridge. He also suggested stopping the rescue operation as it was getting dark.
Colonel Paramvir Singh Nagra, commandant of the DSC centre, said the army was on alert for the past 15 days and was contacted by the Kerala government on Tuesday morning after the devastating landslide in the hill district. He said it was a “major disaster”, adding that the NDRF and state teams were also actively involved. The Navy and the Air Force were also contributing equally.

sniffer dogs being brought in
Some sniffer dogs are also being brought from New Delhi for the rescue operation. Some bridge equipment is also being brought and will reach Wayanad soon.
Responding to a question about any difficulty in continuing rescue operations in the dark and night, the DSC said, “We are having a coordination conference. After that the action for tomorrow will be decided. Till the bridge is ready, the temporary bridge is not safe for civilians to cross. So I suggest that we should continue trying. We should start the efforts after daylight.”
