In a statement on Friday from Boston, Massachusetts, Field Office, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of Jorge Luis Castro-Alvarado. He was arrested in Lynn, Massachusetts, On 1 August.
ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston branch said the migrant “entered the United States illegally before traveling to Massachusetts and allegedly preying on a resident there.” ICE says the Guatemalan immigrant entered the US without being screened, admitted or paroled.
Authorities are still determining when and where Castro-Alvarado first entered American soil. In February, ERO Boston filed an immigration detainer complaint against Castro-Alvarado after he was arrested for assault and battery on a family or household member.
The migrant was later convicted of assault and battery charges, and sentenced to eighteen months in prison. The Linn District Court later reduced the prison sentence to six months.
According to ICE, Essex County Superior Court sentenced Castro-Alvarado in April for two counts of rape and indecent assault and battery on a person over the age of 14. In defiance of ICE’s detainer, the court later released the suspect on bail without notifying immigration officials.
“The Essex County Superior Court released Castro from custody on bail without notifying ERO Boston despite being an active immigration detainer,” ICE reports. “The court placed several conditions on Castro’s bail, including requiring GPS electronic monitoring before releasing him back into the community.”
ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. “Castro posed a significant threat to members of our community,” Lyons said in a statement. “ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by capturing and eliminating non-civilian threats to our New England neighbors.”
