‘I never wanted to become a minister’, will Suresh Gopi leave the post of Union Minister to work in films?

Actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi, the only BJP MP in Kerala, said on Wednesday that he would consider himself saved if he is removed from the post of Union Minister of State for working in films while holding a ministerial post. The statement of the only BJP MP from Kerala has created a stir. Gopi also said that he has sought permission to start shooting for the film ‘Ottakomban’, but has not received it yet. He said, “But I will start shooting for it from September 6.”

The Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism said that after listening to the scripts, there were 20-22 films in which he really wanted to work and he has agreed to act in them. When he sought permission from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to act in films, he was asked how many films he needed permission to work in.

“I said around 22 films. On hearing this, Amit Shah put my request letter aside. But he said permission will be given. Anyway, I will come here on September 6,” Gopi said while speaking at an event organised by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce, according to PTI.

He said that he will bring along with him three or four officials from the ministry who will help him carry out his ministerial duties and for this special arrangements will have to be made on the film sets. He said, “This is all I want to do. So, if they remove me for this, I will consider myself saved. That’s all I can say.”

Gopi said he never wanted to be a minister and still doesn’t want to be. I bowed to their (their leaders’) decision to make me a minister because they said they were giving me the position for the people of Thrissur who voted to bring them to power, not for me. I accepted that decision. I still obey my leaders and will continue to do so. But without my passion (cinema) I will die,” he said.
