‘Dealing with dead bodies is my daily routine. I am used to doing post-mortems. I dissect dead bodies and examine them every day. But this was a difficult time in my life which I will never forget. I have never seen such a gruesome sight. It will always haunt me.’ This is the pain of a government doctor who was responsible for conducting post-mortems of people who were victims of natural calamity in Wayanad, Kerala.

Said- I could not see the dead body twice…

A female doctor conducting the postmortem at a local hospital, who did not want to be identified, said she was seeing scenes that would haunt her forever. Referring to one of the bodies, she said, “The body was so badly crushed that I could not bear to look at it twice. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I have many years of experience in my field but the devastation caused by this landslide has shaken me.”

I thought I couldn’t handle it

The doctor told PTI, ‘When I saw the first body, I told myself that I would not be able to handle it. It was badly crushed. The second body was of a one-year-old child. I was even more devastated after seeing it. Then gradually it was as if there was a flood of bodies. I had never seen anything like this before. I wanted to run away from the hospital, but I had no choice. I can never forget this.’

It is difficult to handle this even for experienced doctors

The doctor said, the condition of the bodies was so bad that it became difficult for even experienced doctors to handle them. The bodies were lying in front of us in many pieces. As if someone had cut them into many pieces. We have to handle the scattered body parts for DNA. This was not at all easy to do.

Health Minister Veena George stressed the importance of psychological counselling for doctors. She said the doctors have witnessed scenes that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
