Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded to the discussion on the budget in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Finance Minister countered each and every attack of the opposition, from reducing the budget of SC-ST to neglecting all states except two and the allegations against Agniveer and industrialists. Describing the budget as the budget of developed India, Nirmala Sitharaman said that it is an inclusive budget. She also responded to the lack of ideas raised by Professor Saugata Roy during the discussion on the budget by mentioning that he did not study from Oxford or Harvard.

The Finance Minister said that Professor Saugata Roy raised many issues during the discussion on the budget. He said that Bengal gave us ‘Vande Mataram’ which we are happy to say even 10 times. The Finance Minister referred to the statement of Professor Roy in which he had said that I do not expect the Finance Minister to be like Manmohan Singh, he is neither a PhD from Oxford, nor has he taken a management degree from Harvard like Chidambaram. He is from our JNU but the problem is that there is a lack of new ideas. Countering this statement, the Finance Minister said that I do not want to be like Manmohan Singh.

The Finance Minister said that the Finance Minister of West Bengal has attended the GST Council meeting with us six times and has contributed well. She has also studied from Calcutta University. Doesn’t she have new ideas too? She further said that the Chief Minister of West Bengal has also studied from a college of Calcutta University. She is a fighter, I respect her completely. Doesn’t she have ideas too? Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that Professor Saugata Roy also teaches in an Indian University or college, not in Harvard or Oxford.
