HSRP Number Plate Karnataka – Deadline, Installation Cost, How to apply?

Karnataka Makes High-Security Registration Plates Mandatory for Vehicles – Deadline, Installation Cost, and Application Process

The Karnataka government has made it mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, to have high-security registration plates (HSRP) installed by November 17, 2023. This move aims to enhance road safety and security by reducing the risk of tampering and misuse of vehicle number plates.

What are High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP)?

HSRP is a tamper-proof number plate made of aluminum and fixed onto a vehicle with non-reusable locks. The plate features a chromium hologram of Ashoka Chakra on the top left corner, making it difficult to counterfeit.

Installation Cost and Deadline

The estimated cost of HSRP installation ranges from Rs 250 to Rs 500, depending on the vehicle type. The deadline for installation is November 17, 2023, but the government has extended the deadline multiple times due to slow uptake. The current deadline is May 31, 2024, with no fines to be levied until June 12, 2024.

Importance of HSRP

HSRP is a crucial step in enhancing road safety and security. It includes a unique 10-digit number linked to the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers, stored in a centralized database. This helps in identifying stolen vehicles and prevents unauthorized activities on Karnataka’s roads.

Precautions

Vehicle owners are advised to avoid using imitation HSRPs, look-alike plates, or smart number plates from roadside vendors, as they do not meet the stringent HSRP standards. The Transport Department has established dedicated helplines to address issues related to HSRP number plates and has posted frequently asked questions on its website to raise awareness.
