How Taapsee Pannu is breaking stereotypes, she is worried about this thing about casting in the industry

Taapsee Pannu is all set to dominate Netflix with the film ‘Phir Aayi Haseen Dilruba’. Its first part ‘Haseen Dilruba’ was released in 2021, in which the actress’ work was appreciated. Now Taapsee has talked with India Today/Aaj Tak about breaking stereotypes and playing different roles.

Taapsee said this on playing different roles

Taapsee was asked how she avoids repeating her previous roles. To this, she replied, ‘Like I remember when the film Pink became a hit, there were many scripts that had roles of exploitation or rape victim. I have been saying no to those roles since 2016. I have rejected countless films where people wanted to portray me as a rape victim or a woman who has been exploited. I said that for my own peace of mind, I don’t want to go through all that again. And at the same time, I had given my all to that character, whatever she went through. I don’t think I have anything more left to give now. And those films have been so iconic in their own way that I don’t want to touch them again and don’t want to spoil them in any way by playing a similar character.’

On not following trends and making her own choices, Taapsee Pannu said, ‘When I did Baby and Naam Shabana, I played the role of a spy, which has now become a rage for people. Now there are a lot of people who say let’s do a spy thriller film. But I did that in 2014, 2017. Why would I do it again? You have woken up now, it doesn’t mean that I will do again what I have done before.’

The actress further said, ‘I have moved beyond that. I think if something works, people start seeing you that way. I remember when I was cast for Thappad, Anubhav sir told me that it is so anti-casting for me that I have cast someone like you in the film. But I want to do this because it is very easy for people to cast you in a role who is arrogant, who doesn’t take anyone’s nonsense, who strikes back. I will not make you fight back. Because people were imagining me only in those roles in which the woman immediately fights and answers the other person. So it is the imagination of a director and writer that you have to look beyond what you are seeing.’

Taapsee doesn’t get offered big roles

Taapsee talked about the casting process. She said, ‘I think the makers will first have to open their minds about casting. Even now, if there is a talk of playing a larger than life role on screen, they feel that I am not right for that, because I have mostly done relatable roles. So ambitious roles are not the ones they see me in. So it is like the one who always plays such roles will get tired and have to leave them so that someone new can do them. If not me, then someone else. So yes, we are kept in a box, which happens in the film as well as in the casting. And we all have to fight to come out of it.’

Taapsee Pannu’s film ‘Phir Aayi Haseen Dilruba’ will stream on Netflix on August 9. Directed by Jayprad Desai, this film will feature Taapsee along with Vikrant Massey, Jimmy Shergill and Sunny Kaushal. This film is a sequel to ‘Haseen Dilruba’.
