Shivrani’s father Devi Prasad, a follower of Arya Samaj, was a supporter of widow remarriage. This is the reason why he sent a letter to Premchand and invited him to Fatehpur. It is also mentioned in the book that Shivrani’s father liked Premchand. Not only this, Shivrani Devi’s father gave Premchand the fare to come to Fatehpur and also gave him some gifts.

What did Premchand write about his marriage?

Premchand’s wife Shivrani Devi had told about her marriage that Premchand’s family did not agree to their marriage. However, Premchand did not tell any member of the family about this. Shivrani said that he married me, it was a big decision in those times. However, it has been told in many reports that Premchand was probably not happy with his marriage in the initial days. He had written that ‘She was older than me. When I saw her face, my blood froze.’ He had also written that ‘Father stumbled in the last years of his life and not only fell himself, but also drowned me: he got me married without thinking.’

The woman Premchand married was proficient in literature, but Shivrani Devi did not have a good command over English. It was the era of British rule, when Premchand used to translate the news published in the most reputed newspaper of that time, ‘Leader’, into Hindi.
