‘How dare you threaten Assam?’, Himanta Biswa Sarma furious at Mamata’s statement that ‘the entire North-East will burn’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing verbal attack on the BJP and its top leadership in her speech on the occasion of the foundation day of her party’s student wing Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. She alleged that the BJP wants to set West Bengal on fire. Targeting the Modi government at the Centre, she said in a warning tone, “If Bengal is set on fire, Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi will also burn. We will topple your chair.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has hit back at Mamata’s statement. He wrote in a post on X, ‘Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language.’ Union Minister and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar also said that this comment does not seem to be of a leader holding a constitutional post, but of someone with an ‘anti-national’ mentality.

The Trinamool government is facing severe criticism and massive protests over the way it handled the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident took place on August 9. Since then, junior doctors, students and common citizens across Bengal, including Kolkata, have been protesting in their own ways demanding justice for the victim. Speaking at the foundation day event of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, Mamata Banerjee attacked the BJP over the violence during the bandh (strike) and the protest march to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’.

If you burn Bengal, we will topple your chair: Mamata

CM Banerjee said, ‘Some people think it is Bangladesh. I love Bangladesh because they talk like us and our culture is also similar. But remember that Bangladesh is a different country and India is a different country. Modi Babu is using his party in the Kolkata rape-murder case to incite violence in Bengal. If you set Bengal on fire, Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi will also burn. We will topple your chair.’

Mamata cannot do anything in Assam: Minister Hazarika

BJP leader from Assam Piyush Hazarika also targeted the Chief Minister of Bengal and said, ‘She cannot threaten us. I seriously condemn her statement. She is not able to control the law and order in her state and is threatening us. I want to request Mamata Banerjee that she is a very senior leader and has been the Chief Minister for a long time. She should know how to speak in public. I seriously condemn her statement. I can assure you that as long as there is a BJP government in Assam and Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Chief Minister, Mamata cannot do anything in Assam.’
