High Court notice to BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on petition challenging Mandi Lok Sabha elections

Headlines

Kangana Ranaut, The Himachal Pradesh High Court has given its verdict on a petition filed by a resident of Kinnaur against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday. In the petition, requesting to cancel the election of Kangana, MP from Mandi, it has been argued that the nomination papers of the petitioner to contest from this Lok Sabha seat were allegedly wrongly rejected.

Kangana will have to file her reply by August 21

Issuing notice, Justice Jyotsna Rewal directed Ranaut to file a reply by August 21. Ranaut had won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat by defeating her nearest rival Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh by a margin of 74755 votes. She got 537002 votes against Singh’s 462267 votes. Seeking cancellation of Ranaut’s election, petitioner Layak Ram Negi said that his nomination papers were wrongly rejected by the Election Officer (Deputy Commissioner, Mandi) and he has also been made a party.

Negi, a former forest department employee, said he got premature retirement and submitted a no dues certificate from the department along with his nomination papers before the election officer. However, he was given a day’s time to submit no dues certificates from the electricity, water and telephone departments and even when he submitted them, the election officer did not accept them and cancelled the nomination papers. He argued that if his papers had been accepted, he could have won the election and said Kangana’s election should be cancelled.
