Heavy rains wreak havoc in Lahore, Pakistan, many areas submerged in flood, 44 year old record broken

There is chaos in Pakistan these days due to heavy rains. Torrential rain in Lahore broke the record of the last 44 years, about 360 mm of rain fell in a few hours in many areas of the city including the airport. Due to this, many areas were flooded.

According to Dawn, Mazhar Hussain, spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Pakistan’s Punjab, said that the record of maximum rainfall in a day during the monsoon has been broken today. The PDMA said that 24 people were killed and 17 injured in monsoon rains in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from July 29 to Thursday.

AFP quoted the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) as saying that the city received about 360 mm of rain in 3 hours. Earlier, 332 mm of rain was recorded in three hours in July 1980, Farooq Dar, deputy director of the agency, said that this rain broke the previous record.

The PDMA has forecast heavy rains from August 1 to 6. During this period, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in most districts of southern Punjab. A PDMA spokesperson said that the water level in rivers, dams and drains is rising due to monsoon rains. He has warned of severe floods due to rising water level of Jhelum river in Mangla from August 1 to 4.

Let us tell you that on July 30, a child and 5 women died due to heavy rains in various districts of Punjab which is part of Pakistan, while 6 people were injured.

A statement issued by the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office said that senior minister Maryam Aurangzeb gave instructions for drainage to be carried out by various authorities. The statement said that the Water and Sanitation Agency, Lahore Development Authority, Lahore West Management Authority and the district administration are working collectively to deal with the monsoon rains.

Maryam Aurangzeb said that as per the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, availability of pumps and other necessary machinery has been ensured for draining out the water. She said that hospitals have been provided with medicines and vaccines for protection after poisonous insect bites.
