Hearing on Vinesh’s medal case completed in Paris, know when the decision can come

The hearing of Vinesh Phogat’s case in Paris Olympics has been completed. The decision can come today (August 9) or tomorrow (August 10). CAS had earlier said that the decision on Vinesh’s appeal will be announced before the end of Paris Olympics. Paris Olympics is to conclude on August 11. But now the decision on the entire case can come on August 9 or 10.

These four arguments were given on behalf of Vinesh during the hearing.

1. Vinesh argued that she did not commit any fraud.

2. His weight gain was due to the body’s natural recovery process.

3. It was argued on behalf of Vinesh that it is the fundamental right of an athlete to take care of his or her body.

4. It was also argued on behalf of Vinesh that her body weight was less than the prescribed limit on the first day of the competition. The weight increased only due to recovery and this is not a case of cheating. It is her fundamental right to fulfill the nutrients required for her body to be healthy.

Decision will come soon
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is hopeful of a positive decision on wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application to the Ad-Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her failure to make weight on the second day of the women’s wrestling 50kg competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The matter is sub judice and a decision is expected soon.

Arguments heard orally along with legal reasoning
All parties were given an opportunity to file their detailed legal arguments before the hearing and then present oral arguments. The Sole Arbitrator indicated that the operative part of the order is expected soon, after which the detailed order and reasons will be put forth. IOA President Dr PT Usha thanked Senior Advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania as well as the Sports Legal Team for helping in presenting arguments on behalf of the IOA.

Dr Usha said, “It is the duty of the IOA to support Vinesh and keep its strong support for her regardless of the outcome of this case. We are proud of her countless achievements during her illustrious career in wrestling.”
