‘He got down from the car, pulled the handcuffs’ rope from the constable, then…’, Assam Police told how the accused drowned in the pond

The main accused in the gangrape in Dhing in Nagaon district of Assam escaped from police custody, jumped into a pond and died. In this case, Nagaon SP Swapnil Deka said that on August 22, a minor was gangraped by three accused. Based on human intelligence and technical input, we had identified three people. We arrested one of these accused yesterday. At around 11 pm, the police took the accused out so that other accused involved in this crime could be caught.

During this time, the accused was taken down from the police vehicle. The place was very narrow. As soon as the accused got down from the vehicle, he suddenly pulled the handcuff rope from the constable and jumped into the pond. We tried our best to save him, but due to darkness we could not save him immediately.

According to news agency ANI, SP Swapnil Deka said that immediately after the incident, we called the SDRF team. We recovered the body of the accused in the morning. He said that the other 2 accused of gang rape are still absconding and we are searching for them. Hopefully we will catch them soon.

What was the matter?

Let us tell you that on Thursday evening, three people gang-raped a minor. The victim was returning home from tuition on her bicycle when the accused surrounded her. The accused fled leaving her injured and unconscious on the roadside near a pond before the locals informed the police.

Villagers boycotted the accused’s family

Meanwhile, according to PTI, the villagers held a meeting on Saturday morning and took three decisions regarding the crime committed by the accused. Mohammad Shahjahan, an elder of the village, said that we have decided not to allow the burial of the accused in the village graveyard, not to attend his ‘Janaza’ and socially boycott his family. He said that ‘the crime of the village youth has shamed us and we cannot allow him to be buried in the community graveyard. A march was also taken out from the village mosque to protest the incident.
