Hartalika Teej Story

According to a legend, Goddess Parvati performed rigorous penance to get Lord Bholenath as her husband. Goddess Parvati performed penance by staying hungry and thirsty on the banks of the river Ganga in the Himalayas. Seeing this condition of Goddess Parvati, her father Himalaya became very sad. One day Maharishi Narad brought a marriage proposal for Parvati ji on behalf of Lord Vishnu, but when Goddess Parvati came to know about this, she started lamenting.

On being asked by a friend, she told that she is doing hard penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. After this, on the advice of her friend, Mother Parvati went to the forest and got immersed in the worship of Lord Shiva. During this time, on the third day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada, in Hasta Nakshatra, Mother Parvati made a Shivling from sand and kept a night vigil, engrossed in the worship of Bholenath. Seeing the hard penance of Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva appeared before her and accepted her as his wife as per Parvati’s wish. Since then, unmarried girls and married women keep a fast on Hartalika Teej to wish for a good husband and for the long life of the husband and get blessings by worshiping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
