‘Hand to mouth income…’, Rahul Gandhi travels in a cab, discusses the challenges faced by gig workers with the driver

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi shared a video on social media in which he talked to a cab driver. Rahul booked a cab through the ride app and talked to the driver Sunil Upadhyay about the challenges faced by India’s gig economy workers.

In a video posted on social media, Rahul Gandhi stressed on understanding the daily struggles of driver Sunil, the pressures of low income and rising inflation. Rahul wrote in his post, “Low income and inflation taking their toll – this is the plight of India’s gig workers! In a discussion with Sunil Upadhyay ji during an Uber trip and then by meeting his family, I took stock of the problems of gig workers like cab drivers and delivery agents in the country.”

Rahul Gandhi further said that they are struggling to survive on a hand to mouth income – no savings and no basis for the family’s future. To solve these problems, Congress state governments will do justice by making concrete policies and INDIA Janbandhan will ensure its nationwide expansion with full struggle.

What kind of change is needed?

During the conversation, Rahul Gandhi asked the cab driver what kind of changes are needed in this sector. Cab driver Sunil pointed out the importance of minimum wages, so that drivers can get enough income to support their families after deductions.

The next day, Rahul Gandhi met Sunil Upadhyay’s family at a local eatery. He talked about their challenges and dreams. Reflecting on their situation, Rahul Gandhi said, “Their ‘hand-to-mouth income’ barely sustains them – there are no savings and no foundation for the family’s future.”

‘Work is being done on making laws…’

Rahul Gandhi assured driver Sunil that Congress-ruled states like Telangana and Karnataka are working on legislation to improve the conditions of gig workers. He stressed that these workers are struggling to survive on meagre incomes, often with no savings or security for their families’ future.
