Gretchen Whitmer pushes back against poll showing Kamala Harris with large lead in Michigan: ‘That’s not true’

Vice President Kamala Harris’ Road to the White House Runs through Michigan.

A key swing state supported former President Donald Trump in 2016 before President Joe Biden Flipped it over Back to the Democrats in 2020. And recent polls have shown Harris A relatively durable lead Trump up in the state.

But Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the state’s two-term Democratic governor and cochair of Harris’ presidential campaign, isn’t buying the rosy scenario.

Speaking on Thursday During the Texas Tribune FestivalWhitmer said she believes Harris can win Michigan in November but cautioned that the results will be closer than the polls show. During her talk, the governor referenced a recent CNN/SSRS poll that showed Harris is ahead of Trump 48% to 43%.

“It makes me nervous to see any poll that says Kamala Harris has a five-point lead in Michigan right now,” she said. “That’s not true.”

“It will be a very close race,” she continued. “I believe we can win it. And I believe we will. But it will be very close.”

Democratic presidential candidates won Michigan in every election from 1992 to 2012. But Trump won the state in 2016 by winning over a sliver of the working-class and union voters that make up the core of the state’s Democratic coalition. Some of these voters supported Biden in 2020 and are poised to hold on ahead of November.

Trump has campaigned in the state in recent weeks seeking support from union leaders in what Whitmer described as a “microcosm” of the United States.

“As we look at these polls, I say to everybody, don’t get comfortable,” Wittmer said during her talk. “You can’t sleep on Michigan.”
