A green corridor was created from Delhi airport to Fortis hospital in Gurugram amid heavy rains and traffic jams to transport a heart. Hospital officials said the 18-km distance was covered in 13 minutes. With the help of nearly 100 police officials, the heart was transported from Kolkata to Gurugram in 4 hours on Wednesday to save the life of a 34-year-old man from Rohtak.
According to PTI, the first green corridor was created by the police in Kolkata from a government hospital where the 54-year-old woman was declared brain dead. Officials said that after getting approval from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), the heart was taken from the hospital to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. After this, the heart was flown to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport via Indigo Airlines.
Delhi and Gurugram police along with hospital staff created a second green corridor, braving heavy traffic jams and sudden rains, the heart was transported from IGI airport to Gurugram’s Fortis hospital covering a distance of 18 kms in just 13 minutes, according to a hospital statement. With the help and support of nearly 100 police officials, the entire process was completed within four hours, the statement said.

When the heart reached the hospital, a team of doctors led by Dr Udgeeth Dhir, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Fortis Gurgaon, transplanted it. Dr Dhir said the 34-year-old patient was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, with his heart functioning at just 10 to 15 per cent. He was already on artificial heart support with a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) and was registered on the NOTTO list for heart transplant, Dr Dhir said.
Regarding heart transplant, Dr. Dheer said that immediate heart transplant was necessary in this case. Yash Rawat, facility director of Fortis Memorial Research Institute, said that the patient’s condition is stable at the moment and we will be able to cure him in the next few days.
