Green and Marsh will have to shoulder more responsibility in bowling against India: Pat Cummins

Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins hopes that all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh will take more responsibility of bowling during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series to be held later this year. The Indian team will play a series of 5 Test matches on the tour of Australia. The first Test match of the tour will be played in Perth from November 22.

Cummins said during a program, “It is beneficial to have an all-rounder in the team. In the last few years, we have not been able to use them as much as we thought. This is a good thing.” He said, “But something different can happen in this summer season. We can give Green and Marsh a little more responsibility in bowling.”

The Australian captain said, ‘A player like Green started as a bowler in Shield cricket, but he did not have to bowl much in Test matches. Now he has become more mature than before. I think we will depend on him a little more.’

25-year-old Green has taken 35 wickets in 28 Test matches so far in his career at an average of 35.31. Cummins said, ‘The first issue is whether both of them (Green and Marsh) make it to the top 6 on the basis of their batting alone or not.’

He said, ‘We are really fortunate that we have a bowler like Nathan Lyon (530 wickets in 129 Tests), who can bowl many overs for us. In such a situation, it is not necessary that you have an all-rounder, but having a 5th bowling option makes a big difference.

Cummins said, ‘We have 6 bowling options in the form of Green and Marsh (273 wickets in 70 Tests). This is a good thing, but in batting, the top 6 batsmen should make a place in the team on the basis of their batting only.
