Graham Thorpe Died: A wave of mourning in the sports world… This legendary cricketer passed away, played 100 test matches for England

Former England and Surrey batsman Graham Thorpe has passed away. He was 55 years old. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave this information. Thorpe, who played 100 Test matches for England from 1993 to 2005, became seriously ill in 2022, but details of his medical condition were not shared by the ECB.

The ECB said in its statement, ‘The ECB is sharing with great sadness the news that Graham Thorpe has passed away. It is not possible to describe in words the deep shock we have felt at Graham’s death. He was one of England’s best batsmen ever and was respected by fans all over the world. There was no question about his skill. His abilities and achievements in a 13-year international career brought great joy to his teammates, England and Surrey supporters.’

Graham Thorpe scored 6744 Test runs in 100 Test matches at an average of 44.66, which included 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries. Thorpe also played 82 ODIs for England. During this, he scored 2380 runs at an average of 37.18. Thorpe scored 21 half-centuries in ODIs. This batsman played county cricket for Surrey and scored nearly 20,000 runs for the team.

Thorpe also served as the batting coach of the English team. In 2022, Thorpe was made the head coach of the Afghanistan team, although he fell seriously ill shortly afterwards. His last Test match for England was against Bangladesh at Chester-le-Street, which was his 100th Test match. Due to the rise of Kevin Pietersen, Thorpe was dropped for the 2005 Ashes series. The best phase of Thorpe’s career was during 2000-01. Then Thorpe scored centuries on Pakistan and Sri Lanka tours, due to which England won the Test series in both places. In March 2002, in the Christchurch Test match in New Zealand, Thorpe scored a double century in just 231 balls.
