GPS location, drone images, sniffer dogs… search operation still underway in Wayanad, 300 people missing

Relief and rescue operations are underway after the massive landslide in Wayanad. The rescue team is using the last location of people, drone images and GPS coordinates from cell phones to locate survivors buried under the debris. The search operation has gained momentum after the Army built a 190 feet Bailey bridge.

On the fourth day of the landslide, a family of four was rescued from a house in an area near Padavetty Kunnu, raising hopes among hundreds of rescue workers looking for survivors. With nearly 300 people still missing, the death toll is expected to rise.

More than 300 people have died so far in the massive landslide that occurred in Wayanad in the early hours of July 30. Rescue workers have found only 195 bodies so far. The death of the remaining people has been confirmed from their body parts.

Rescue operations have been speeded up by a Bailey bridge erected by the Army. The bridge allowed teams to move heavy machinery, including excavators and ambulances, to the worst-affected Mundakkai and Choorlamalla villages. According to official sources, the exact figure of human loss will be known only when rescue teams use heavy machinery to clear the debris and wooden houses.

Ongoing genetic testing of body parts

Officials said that many more body parts have been collected and genetic testing is going on to identify the remains. About 40 rescue teams are conducting search operations in the landslide affected areas with sniffer dogs. The joint teams include personnel from Army, NDRF, DSG, Coast Guard and Navy. Along with this, another search operation is being carried out using police helicopters.

Forest department employees along with the Coast Guard and Navy are also going to search those places where the bodies are likely to be washed away. A drone-based radar is coming from Delhi on Saturday to detect the bodies buried in the soil. The help of 6 dogs is also being taken in the search operation. Today 4 more dogs will be brought from Tamil Nadu.

Three landslides hit Wayanad

Let us tell you that the first landslide in Wayanad happened at around 2 am on the morning of July 30. After this, a landslide happened again at around 4.10 am. With this, a landslide happened for the third time. In the landslide, 4 villages of Wayanad turned into a pile of rubble, from which rescue operations are being carried out continuously to evacuate people. With the progress of the rescue operation, the death toll is constantly increasing.
