Goa: Opposition attacks CM Sawant over alleged loss of Rs 207 crore in Mopa airport deal

Headlines

Mopa Airport, Opposition leaders in Goa, led by Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai, have launched a scathing attack on CM Pramod Sawant and alleged that his decision has caused a loss of Rs 207 crore to the state. Sardesai raised the issue during the state assembly session and claimed that the amendment in the concession agreement with GMR Goa International Airport Limited has allegedly caused huge losses to the state of Goa.

Vijay Sardesai made serious allegations against CM Sawant

The GFP chief claimed that the Goa government was initially supposed to receive its revenue share with the GGIAL agreement from May 31, 2024, but the state cabinet granted an extension deferring the incoming revenues till December 7, 2024. This was done to compensate for the losses incurred by GGIAL during the Covid restrictions for a period of just 20 days, Sardesai claimed.

Sardesai said that this is a revenue holiday that CM Sawant has given to GMR. This amount is Rs 207 crore, which the state of Goa has lost due to the extension of the concession agreement. It is shocking to know that instead of creating revenue for Goa, the state cabinet decided to lose money. This is a loss for the people of Goa and questions arise on the entire cabinet whether they are in collusion with the government treasury.

AAP Goa chief Amit Palekar also targeted CM Pramod Sawant, asking why such a long tax holiday was given on the Mopa airport deal. For a loss of only 20 days due to Covid restrictions, why did the state cabinet decide to give an extension of almost six months. Who is responsible for the loss of money? This is the money of the people of Goa and it seems that corruption has taken place in this deal as well. Palekar asked who is benefiting from giving a private company a benefit of Rs 207 crore by extending the concession agreement?
