About 500 people have been evacuated from the central mountain because of the forest fire, a spokesman for the Harj region said on Friday.
Tourists, hikers and sportsmen are being evacuated from Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz mountain range, as the fire continues to spread despite efforts to contain it.
The fire was discovered in the afternoon near Königsberg. District Fire Chief Kai-Uwe Lohs initially described the fire as about 300 meters (about 985 feet) long.
Difficult fire fighting situation
About 150 firefighters are battling a raging forest fire on Broken Mountain in the Harge National Park. Firefighting is difficult, and the situation on Broken is “serious,” the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt state said Friday evening.
