Fugitive former mayor Alice Guo has returned to the Philippines to face the Senate

Alice Guo, the former mayor who fled after being accused of having ties to Chinese organized crime, is back in the Philippines, where she is expected to be brought before the Senate.

Guo, wearing an orange T-shirt marked ‘captive’ and a black face mask, touched down in Manila early Friday morning.

The Senate began its investigation into Guo in May after a casino in Bamban was raided on what they say was a scamming center run on land she partly owned.

The town of Bamban is about 100km (62 mi) north of Manila in the province of Tarlac.

Guo became mayor in 2022.

An anti-corruption office removed her as mayor in August, citing serious misconduct over her alleged ties to illegal gaming operations in the town.
